Poetry and Music at Launch of My Ousie is ‘n Blom
Snail Press’ latest title, the Afrikaans poetry collection edited by Charl-Pierre Naudé, My Ousie is ‘n Blom, was launched at the Irma Stern Museum last night. A slightly bemused Valiant Swart - a rock artist who rarely, one suspects, plays sedate poetry gigs - and a deadly serious David Ferguson provided musical entertainment (on the acoustic guitar and harmonica/electro-modulator, respectively).
Reading from their work were poets Danie Marais (”In die donkerkamer” and “In Switzerland”), Cornel Judels (”die wegraping”), Ronelda S Kamfer (”Klein Cardo” and “Die baas van die plaas”), Antjie Krog (”die kwiltdekenkoningin”), Liesel Kruger (”As”), Loftus Marais (”Wasmandjie”), Chris Brunette (”Oor my besoek aan New York”) and Yabadaka Shamah (”Ons is nog kaffers” and “My ousie”).
Yabadaka Shamah is actually the name of a voice which comes to the poet pictured above, who lives near Pretoria in Gauteng Province, and writes what he hears under Shamah’s name. The name’s meaning is “reasonable man.” Shamah’s “My Ousie” is the compilation’s title poem: an “ousie,” in this context, refers to the poet’s girlfriend (my ousie is a blom = my girl is a flower). The word comes from the southern African term for “sister” - sisi - and has various different meanings. On a white-owned farm in the Free State Province, for instance, an ousie is a black woman who does domestic work.
