South African writer and poet Denis Hirson will read from his 1986 novel, [1] The House Next Door to Africa (David Philip/New Africa Books) at Cape Town’s [2] Labia Theatre on Wednesday, 2 August, at 6 p.m.

[3] Clarke’s Bookshop will be on hand with a selection of Hirson’s books for sale and signing. He is also the author of two memoirs, [4] I Remember King Kong (The Boxer) and [5] We Walk Straight So You Better Get Out the Way (both Jacana titles).

RSVP to Morgan Vesty by 28 July: [6] morgan@newafricabooks.co.za, (021) 674 4136.

From the reviewers:

The house next door to Africa is an utterly honest, powerfully emotional, excitingly visual account of a white child’s experience of growing up in South Africa. It is brilliantly observed, with the smallest visual detail often throwing a whole scene into a new and rewardingly perceptual relief; it is often wickedly funny, particularly in the observation of the rituals of white adolescence.
- Michael Wade, Southern African Review of Books, Summer 1988
